“I MAKE A DIFFERENCE” There is a story about an old man who walked the beach with a pail, every day, picking up starfish that had been washed in by the tide, and throwing them back into the sea. One day a young boy stopped the old man and asked, “Why do you throw the starfish back? It doesn’t matter. They will only wash up on the shore again tomorrow.” The old man picked a starfish out of his pail, threw it as far as he could into the sea, and replied... “It made a difference to that one.” Parents make a difference; we can light the way to our children’s future by being involved in what they like and are curious about as well as by giving them the opportunity to test themselves and help each other. Think about all that you never had the chance to try as a child and all that you did. You can help fulfill your child’s natural thirst for knowledge by showing them what is out there, attempting some things on your own, and trying some challenges together. By supporting their wonder, your kids will soon take the stern and show you the way, too. Be happy that they share their findings with you and take the time to sincerely listen to them; for these are the special times that help their confidence grow and create a young empowered individual. I found the story and message above in the Silver Trail Middle PTSA school address for the year and added my own two cents. CV 11/01/07 |
